Independent women

Introduction

“Mythe & Opera” addresses workplace-related themes from the angle of a foundational myth and an opera. The aim is to draw comparisons between the experiences of famous figures from literature – their stories, trials and tribulations, resources – and the issues facing managers today and the methods they use at work.

Content

“Mythe & Opéra” is an invitation to listen to the unique but very different stories of three independent women. Each of these women meticulously defined their own inspiring, dynamic and recognised leadership style and then consolidated it vigorously within a patriarchal environment. However, this was not achieved without resistance, first from within and then from without.

These independent women found their voice, discovered their resources, made their demands, built alliances, developed strategies and reshaped structures, and, in doing so, freed themselves in order to embody with intelligence the concept of independence and profoundly renew it in the epochs that they lived in.

These independent figures are not only inspiring for women. Penelope’s demand for independence, Pamina’s founding initiative, Léonore’s candid words… relate to all audiences. Interestingly, these great stories have all chosen women to embody them.

To mark the end of this programme, the final session of the seminar is followed by an evening at the opera so that participants may relive, at close quarters, the major challenges faced by these great independent figures.

The speaker

Stéphane Longeot

Stéphane Longeot is a philosopher and musicologist, as well as founder of the consultancy “Mythe & Opéra”. He has worked on how imagination structures, motivates and inspires decision-making in businesses. A guest speaker at Essec and HEC, he designs inspiring business seminars that invite participants to take the time to reflect in order to better comprehend the challenges they are confronted with using their intelligence and sensitivity. Foundational myths bear witness to the sweeping change that has occurred over the course of history. By listening to these classic stories, by drawing comparisons with the challenges we face, it’s possible to revive our imagination in order to consider, new unprecedented and stimulating opportunities.
